Every year at HITEC, there’s a new buzzword. We remember the days of “big data”, “PCI” and “blockchain”. If you weren’t talking about them, then you weren’t hanging out with the cool kids. This year’s buzzword didn’t have people running to the store to buy jars of salsa, but instead feverishly getting their electronics orders in ASAP.
If you happened to read my pre-event blog post (link here), then you already know about my excitement to attend Phillip R. Maltin’s presentation about “Solving the Mystery of Employment Law: Techniques for Controlling the Workforce and Staying out of Court.” Well, it did not disappoint. I walked out of Mr. Maltin’s presentation with a better understanding of employment law, and I’m certain that I was not the only one.

To maintain its high value, plans for preventing pirate exhibitors (also known as Outboarders or Suitcasers) at HITEC® 2021 (Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference) have been established for the upcoming show. It is common for unaffiliated or non-exhibiting vendors to take advantage of the show's popularity by promoting their wares leading up to and near the show, or on the exhibit hall floor in an unofficial capacity. Some plan product demonstrations and similar events to "steal" attendees from conference organizers and supporters. Such practices weaken the show's worth to its supporters and organizers. The producer, HFTP® (Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals), is enacting preventive measures to restrain pirate exhibitors, including rules prohibiting unofficial companies from associating themselves with HITEC, stepping-up security and increasing awareness of the issue among HITEC constituents and official HITEC hotels.
